So Why Ward 2 & 8 are Combined
In March the PEG (Voting Population) numbers were
released by the various municipalities. Each election year they are
reviewed for proper distribution within each municipality and the
region of Peel. The Board of Trustees requested from the Government
to add a 13th Trustee to help balance the numbers. Unfortunately, the
Liberal government ignored our request. Don Stephens
(Ward 2 Trustee) and I fought strongly against merging the two
Wards and moving the extra Ward to Brampton. As the numbers
below illustrate, this involved moving the problem from Brampton down to Mississauga,
and having to many people represented by one trustee.
One of my key
objections to the merger of Ward 2 and Ward 8 is based on the
issue of declining enrollment, which will result in the next term, 2
or 3
communities school being consolidated. This is a large and complex task
for just one trustee. However, the Board voted in favour of the
motion for consolidation of Wards 2 and 8 which I must support.
